Density sources
122 published figures across 32 materials. Each one names the supplier, quotes the figure in the units that supplier prints, and gives the date the page was read.
How a range becomes a number
Each material needs at least three independent suppliers. The calculators use the midpoint of the published range and show the range beside it, because the difference between the light and heavy ends of a range is larger than most people's contingency. Every calculator lets you replace the midpoint with your own supplier's figure, which beats any table.
Sources removed after audit
Every cited URL was re-fetched and checked against the figure attributed to it. Two sources were removed from the whole dataset.
- gravelshop.com prints the identical constant, 2,410 lb per cubic yard, on every product page regardless of material. It was confirmed on the pea gravel, decomposed granite, river rock, concrete sand and mason sand pages. It is boilerplate, not a measurement, and it had been the most-cited source in the dataset.
- engineeringtoolbox.com is one secondary compendium that had been reused across twelve materials, which is not three independent suppliers. Its gravel figure was also read off a table describing something else.
Three individual figures were also corrected: a compost density read off the adjacent row, which was topsoil; a concrete figure traced to a paper about structural lightweight concrete; and a safety data sheet's relative density read as a bulk density, when it is the specific gravity of the solid grains.
Materials backed by fewer than three suppliers
These ranges are marked provisional on their calculator pages. A thin range stated plainly is more use than a confident number with nothing behind it.
- Pea gravel calculator: 2 suppliers.
- Decomposed granite calculator: 2 suppliers.
- Stone dust calculator: 2 suppliers.
- Dirt calculator: 2 suppliers.

Gravel calculator
1424 to 1780 kg/m3calculators use 1602 (1.35 tons per cubic yard, 1.6 tonnes per cubic metre)
Loose, as delivered. Four producers and yards across three states. The verifier dropped one yard's 3,500 lb per cubic yard ceiling because it implies a 22 percent void fraction, which loose gravel cannot reach.

Pea gravel calculator
1543 to 1670 kg/m3calculators use 1606 (1.35 tons per cubic yard, 1.61 tonnes per cubic metre)
Two suppliers survived the independence check. Three were dropped: one prints the same weight on eight unrelated products, one shares its figure with a crushed granite page, and one had been superseded by its own calculator.
Fewer than three independent suppliers. Treat as provisional.

Landscape rock calculator
1424 to 1602 kg/m3calculators use 1513 (1.28 tons per cubic yard, 1.51 tonnes per cubic metre)
Loose. The verifier brought the top of this range down from 1,780 after finding the figure behind it came from an article quoting gradings that yard does not stock.

Decomposed granite calculator
1483 to 1780 kg/m3calculators use 1632 (1.38 tons per cubic yard, 1.63 tonnes per cubic metre)
Loose, as delivered. Two suppliers. A third was dropped after the verifier showed its loose and compacted pair were two ordering factors applied to the same in-place volume, not two measurements.
Fewer than three independent suppliers. Treat as provisional.

Crushed stone calculator
1424 to 1602 kg/m3calculators use 1513 (1.28 tons per cubic yard, 1.51 tonnes per cubic metre)
Loose, as delivered, including AASHTO and ASTM No. 57 stone. A producer figure of 105 lb per cubic foot was dropped because it implies 37 percent voids, below the ASTM C29 floor for loose open-graded stone, so it is a compacted number being averaged with loose ones.

1424 to 1661 kg/m3calculators use 1542 (1.3 tons per cubic yard, 1.54 tonnes per cubic metre)
